E-mail can be a very quick and efficient way to have your advising questions answered; however, some questions are better addressed in an appointment.

- Your e-mail exchanges with university faculty and staff are part of your official academic record.
- E-mail is NOT a secure form of communication; be careful about what you include in e-mail.
- Always use your Ohio State e-mail address.This is the only way the recipient of your e-mail can be sure it's you, as you are the only one who is supposed to have access to your e-mail account.
- It is NOT recommended that you forward your Ohio State e-mail to a non-Ohio State e-mail account (such as gmail, yahoo, or hotmail). However, if you decide to do so, be aware that Ohio State e-mail could end up in a junk or spam folder. You are responsible for knowing the contents of any official
Ohio State correspondence that is sent by e-mail.
- Include content in the subject line; an e-mail without a subject line may be treated as SPAM by an e-mail server.
- Be aware of when you are most likely to get a response. If you send a message to your advisor at 1:00 a.m., don't expect an answer at 6:00 a.m. Likewise, if you e-mail your advisor Saturday night, don't expect an answer on Sunday. Advisors (like many other members of the university community) keep hours between 8:00 a.m.and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (standard business hours and days), so that is when they will likley be reading and responding to e-mail. It is reasonable to expect a response within 1-2 business days.
- Please e-mail one advisor, instead of an entire advising list to get your questions answered.
A note about e-mail etiquette - Include a greeting in your e-mail, such as "Hi, Dr. Smith," or "Dear Mike." Most instructors should be addressed as "Professor," "Dr.," "Mr.," or "Ms." and their last name, unless they have specifically introduced themselves with their first name and have given you permission to address them with their first name. Also, "Hey" instead of "Hi," "Hello," or "Dear" is considered too familiar and thus inappropriate for e-mail to anyone other than your friends. Do not use texting shortcuts.
